We seem close to being favorites for the pennant, but resist a tweak or two to get us there.

As for Fay, I have to agree. His recent "MLB Inbox" was riddled with strange logic and seemed interested in simply spewing the company line.

As of late, I've been concerned about the Reds inability to monetize the value of their prospects. It seems that they've been holding on to some of them for a season too long, dragging down their trade value. Not sure if that concern is valid, but it's going to become more of a problem as we have more prospects for fewer spots.

Anyway, thanks for the comment!

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-67570573724641648562010-12-23T22:48:44.377-08:002010-12-23T22:48:44.377-08:00It's astonishing to me that people argue again...It's astonishing to me that people argue against the Reds trading for Greinke. I fully expect him to be a top-7 pitcher with the Brewers. And with the Reds he'd probably be a top-5 pitcher with the Reds' defense behind him.

I keep hearing people, Jhon Fya comes to mind, who argue that the Reds can't make this move happen because of the financial components. Or that trading away prospects would be counterintuitive to what the club is trying to build (a contender built from within). Well, newsflash, damn near all of the team is homegrown and there are just a few holes to fill that the organization can't fill from within (such as a legitimate ace).

These arguments hold no water for me. The Reds are on the cusp of being serious contenders and to get there they need an ace and they need one right now; they can't wait to see if one of the homegrown arms will develop into one. Make the finances work. As far as trading prospects for players to fill the team's needs goes, if you don't use 'em. lose 'em. That's my motto when it comes to prospects who are being blocked or are ready for the Majors. The Reds have plenty of those.PeterNincompoopnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-7024347024960411632010-12-23T21:13:53.201-08:002010-12-23T21:13:53.201-08:00Will,

I was thinking more along the lines of the following:

Cain = Sappelt
Escobar = Cozart
Jeffress = Joseph
Odorizzi = I.Gullion

I'd also gladly toss in a Francisco/Boxberger/Frazier type sweetener to get it done.

That's a better package of talent for the Royals and not one that would weaken us in any appreciable manner.

Just really frustrating to not be all in on a pitcher like Greinke. When all are going good, Greinke is a top 5 pitcher in baseball (unless I'm forgetting someone: R.Halladay, King Felix, T.Lincecum, C.Lee).

I think it was a big mistake not to have gotten him, especially when he was so easily gotten.

Thanks for the comment!

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-75828451074366741182010-12-23T21:05:07.663-08:002010-12-23T21:05:07.663-08:00Smitty,

He's a personal favorite and the stars were aligned for us to reel him in.

I'm not convinced that Upton is destined for super-stardom. Maybe he will, but he may not get much better than he has shown.

Anyway, it's a disappointing miss for us.

Thanks for the comment!

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-61678716751587978802010-12-23T09:59:47.303-08:002010-12-23T09:59:47.303-08:00Completly agree.

They should hire me as the GM (yes lark, i would have a job for you)

We still have an opportunity... Not to mention the likelihood Greinke will end up taking less than market value in FA due to his wanting to stay out of the big markets will likely allow for the Brewers to retain him for the long term (they did try to retain Sabathia with a fair contract just a couple seasons ago). People thought Oswalt was a Reds killer, they ain't seen nothing yet.

On top of all that I thought the package was good not great that the Royals received.

Heisey, Cozart, Bailey, Boxberger has to be on par with if not slightly better a package than Cain, Escobar, Odorizzi & Jeffress. It certainly would have kept us in the discussion.Willnoreply@blogger.com
