True, money and the financial structure o...Smitty,

True, money and the financial structure of baseball underlie all baseball operations. Still, given that the best GMs, managers, and coaches cost a fraction of the amount of the best players, one could argue that there is little excuse for not having elite talent in the managerial/coach positions.

In fact, there is a net cost savings to having top notch front office and coaching staff, as they will draft and develop MORE on-the-field talent.

For example, the A's and Twins are constantly churning players, because they are confident that they will be able to replace that talent. The Reds, on the other hand, haven't gotten to the point where they have the steady flow of talent, so they feel less comfortable parting ways with the talent they have.

For years, the Braves have enjoyed great stability at GM, manager, and pitching coach. It lead to tremendous success and, at one point, John Schuerholz created such a strong organizational culture that he felt he could bring in any malcontent player (i.e. Barry Bonds) and have them conform to the culture of the organization.

It's expensive to build a top notch front office and coaching staff, but it's more expensive not to. And, a non-large revenue team like the Reds, simply can't afford NOT to.

Anyway, thanks for the comment!

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-42043016161655381152009-10-08T04:13:51.424-07:002009-10-08T04:13:51.424-07:00i think alot of that has to do with the amount of ...i think alot of that has to do with the amount of money these particular teams have, its harder for small market teams to get that effect because those managers/coaches and players cost money.smittynoreply@blogger.com
