As I recall, Boone had a big, loose, all-or-nothing type swing. And, as you mention, Puckett falls well short of Boone with the glove.

I loved to watch Boone on defense. Two things always jumped out at me. First, after he fielded the ball he had a little crow-hop that he used to get into proper throwing position. I loved that he did that on just about every chance to set his feet. Second, I really don't think I've seen anyone faster than Boone at turning the double play. He was lightning quick.

Anyway, enough of my reminiscing and back to the present. Unfortunately, I suspect you're right on Puckett. He's got enough upside to be intriguing, but I'm not sure he's got enough polish to land a middle infield job. And, I'm not sure he's got enough offense to be a starter at a corner spot.

Ultimately, the best case may be a utility player, but he's still got some development time left.

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts!

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-52132887485185849552011-01-16T19:56:56.835-08:002011-01-16T19:56:56.835-08:00Smitty,

As a college prospect, he's surprisingly raw and he simply might not have enough development time left to get it done.

As I recall, in my research on Puckett his head coach said something to the effect that he loved Puckett's athleticism and thought he'd be a tremendous outfielder at the professional level. So, ultimately, I'm not sure he makes it at an up-the-middle position.

Thanks for the comment!

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-36776147841354344342011-01-15T07:14:30.209-08:002011-01-15T07:14:30.209-08:00Puckett gives me a bit of a Bret Boone (as a Red) ...Puckett gives me a bit of a Bret Boone (as a Red) vibe at the plate. Now only if he could play defense like 'ole Boonie we might have something here. I think he's alot like Valaika though I think Chris has a much better chance to stick at 2nd.

Cody welcome to Danny Dorns world.Willnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-48643217990655826252011-01-13T11:28:06.757-08:002011-01-13T11:28:06.757-08:00I find it incredibly mind boggling that with his a...I find it incredibly mind boggling that with his athleticism he cant stick at 2nd base. I mean if Dan Uggla can play second, then why cant he?

He is more athletic than Uggla, maybe all he needs is reps there.

Although i can remember when Phillips was a prospect, He was athletic but everyone's opinion of him was all bat and questionable glove. A sneaky good value.

Best,
LarkLark11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06571198327064220683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6347536209014288641.post-39358302367917010472011-01-11T16:36:30.969-08:002011-01-11T16:36:30.969-08:00Thoughts on the Fred Lewis signing?Thoughts on the Fred Lewis signing?vottofanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16421415907828123940noreply@blogger.com
